Volunteer Opportunities

Special Plant Rescue Project

ASNV is partnering with the local environmental group Lands & Waters to implement Native Plant Rescue and Relocation Volunteer Days.  The effort is supported by a grant from TogetherGreen, a National Audubon initiative with funding from Toyota.

  • ASNV is sending volunteers to rescue native plants before they are bulldozed for various transportation development projects.

  • The rescued flora are being replanted at Audubon at Home sites, including native gardens and outdoor classrooms.

  • Gems such as milkweed, American holly, dogwood, and blueberries are being rescued and relocated.

This initiative will continue through May 2009.  In exchange for labor, volunteers are welcome to take plants to place in their yards.

We need volunteer help.  Please bring your work gloves and energy on Saturday, November 1 from 1-4 pm at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

Contact ASNV's Elaine Franklin at elaine@audubonva.org about assisting with this project and subsequent rescues and plantings throughout the year.

Steward Needed at Colvin Run Mill

If you are an ASNV member and like to garden, here’s an opportunity to adopt an Audubon at Home butterfly garden at Colvin Run Mill. You will initially work with Katy Simenson, an ASNV master naturalist who established the Colvin Run Mill site.

Maintaining the garden will only require four visits per year as follows:

  • one spring cleaning to remove leaves and brush, pull weeds, and add mulch;

  • two summer visits to pull weeds, stake tall plants as necessary, and water;

  • one clean-up in late fall or early winter to cut stalks and pull weeds.

This is a great opportunity to spend time outdoors, get to know a historic site in the heart of Fairfax, and learn from a fellow seasoned gardener and nature enthusiast. Interested?  Email your questions and interest to: elaine@audubonva.org.
