Birds are some of the most effective indicators of our ever-changing environment.

Because of the diversity of their habitats, their observable nature, and their location near the top of the food chain, disturbed or sick birds are signs that the environment is unbalanced. Birds are threatened by water and air pollution, habitat destruction, and the effects of toxic chemicals and pesticides. The National Audubon Society works to protect birds and other wild animals and to conserve the ecosystems that sustain them. The National Audubon Society is a non-profit environmental organization that is apparently dedicated to the protection of American birds.

The Society consists of nearly 500 chapters in the United States, each of which is an independent non-profit organization affiliated with the National Society. The Audubon Society was founded in the 19th century to protect birds hunted for their feathers in clothing production. The Audubon Society helped create the first Federal Bird Reserve, which ultimately led to the formation of the National Wildlife Refuge System. But John James Audubon's career as a scientific illustrator of birds made his name a natural choice for an ornithological society.

The Audubon Society condemned the changes in ESA, in particular the proposed considerations on economic costs and benefits when deciding whether to include a species in the list of endangered species. Hemenway paired women with naturalists and people interested in ornithology; the group called itself the Audubon Society of Massachusetts. The Audubon Society criticizes natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing and has opposed efforts to expand natural gas exploration in the United States. I believe that my activities at Audubon, including participation in my local Audubon section and on more important issues, have made a difference both in my local community and at the regional and national levels.

Over the decades, the Audubon Society expanded its mission of protecting birds from plume hunters to lobby for federal policies on air, water, and endangered species. In September, the Audubon Society backed a lawsuit filed by 16 states against the federal government for its alterations in the ESA. The Audubon Society has recognized the region as one of the most important habitats for birds on the continent. When the Audubon Society was first formed in 1886, tuft hunters were decimating North America's bird populations in the name of fashion.

Many members of the Audubon Society participate in the annual Christmas bird count, a voluntary census of bird populations. Audubon's nature centers are one of the main elements of the Audubon network, reaching one million visitors every year. While the National Audubon Society focuses on larger-scale issues, such as restoring ecosystems, protecting the Endangered Species Act, and maintaining the restrictions of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, the organization also encourages grassroots initiatives to protect birds and other wildlife. Audubon seeks to generate greater demand for climate change by creating sustained popular influence among the bipartisan members of Audubon, which has one million members and supporters.
